Happy birthday, Trees!

My colleague once said that women can leave three lasting legacies: write a book, give birth, and plant a tree.

Today, the trees I planted turned 6 years old. 🙂

Yes, I brought Doraemon with me 🙂 *Some of the photos were taken by buhaykalsada.multiply.com (website no longer active)

When I was still working for IBM in 2008, I joined a company-wide tree planting activity.  We all hiked to Ipo Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan, Philippines. It took us hours to get to the tree planting site and it just felt great to give back to Mother Nature. At the time, there is an alarming rate of deforestation in the area and several mountaineers also did their part in planting trees.

It is one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life. The trees are now 6 years old and I couldn’t imagine how tall they are. Anytime is the best time to plant a tree. In this ever-changing world, where only a small portion of the world are caring about trees, it doesn’t hurt to take the initiative to plant even just one tree. You can start leaving a legacy and making your mark in saving the Earth.

When will you start? 🙂

Asian Haul!

image

One of the Asian dilemmas when you move to and live in a different country for good is finding a restaurant or supermarket where you can buy Asian food. For Filipinos like me, the first thing we google is the closest Filipino store/grocery. Why? Because no matter where we are, we still cook Filipino food and crave for Filipino chocolates/junk food. Not all Asian ingredients are available in a typical local market here so finding an Asian market where we can buy everything we need is like finding Mecca.

From top to bottom, my haul from Asia Mart are as follows: Magic Rabbit candy (my childhood favorite!), Pocky, SkyFlakes, Martin Purefoods Hotdogs (as good as Tender Juicy Hotdogs!), Pork Tocino, Star Margarine, and Reno Liver Spread.

More Asian haul next time!

Thoughts: If I were taller than trees, I wouldn’t be able to appreciate how majestic they are.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”.  -Martin Luther King Jr.

Very memorable shot for two things:

It was my first time to get a closer look at a Balete tree, which according to Philippine folklore, is a haunted tree and is believed to be where supernatural beings and spirits dwell. So it was pretty scary but I had no other choice because the pathway leading to the farm was surrounded by Balete trees. This photo also marks the very first day (okay..night) that I fell in love with photography. 🙂

“An optimist is a person who sees only the lights in the picture, whereas a pessimist sees only the shadows. An idealist, however, is one who sees the light and the shadows, but in addition sees something else: the possibility of changing the picture, of making the lights prevail over the shadows.” -Felix Adler

Talk to the Hand

“If you light a lamp for someone else, it will also brighten your path.” – Buddha

This buddharupa is so huge that I could’ve reached the core of the earth if it sneezed down on me. Really. It can even slap me to death (think mosquito). Anywho, I just found out that buddha statues/buddharupas have different hand gestures or “mudras” and the buddharupa’s hand gesture above is called “Abhaya” which is a gesture of reassurance, blessing and protection.

Interesting fact: The “rock on” sign that you do every time you’re watching a concert or if you think you’re cool and wanna look like it but really you’re not, is similar to the Buddha hand gesture called “Karana Mudra” which is a gesture to expel demons. Now you know what to do once you see your ______ ! Select the best answer: a) boss  b) ex-girlfriend/ex-boyfriend  c) in-laws d) president e) all of the above
